Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lakeland District Curriculum
Language Arts in elementary school gives students a firm foundation in phonics, writing, vocabulary, fluency, reading application, literary analysis, informational texts, and technological literacy. Middle school students build upon this foundation by learning how to improve vocabulary, how to extract meaning from texts, how to write for different audiences, how to communicate orally and visually, how to conduct research, and how to take tests. High school students crown their knowledge of language arts with constructing meaning from text; communicating effectively through written, oral, and visual media; and analyzing and responding to literature.
Topics within the elementary science curriculum include the scientific method, matter, energy, motion, earth, space, health, and living organisms. Middle school students move on to more intensive studies of physical science, earth science, and life science. Upon entering high school, students have the options of studying earth science, biology, chemistry, forensics, anatomy, environmental science, marine science, zoology, and physics.

It is important to show gratitude towards your childs' teachers, a thank you note is always welcome. Volunteering in the classroom can help ease the burden of teaching. There are also organizations that connect teachers with grant funding to help establish a classroom initiative; trying to help a busy teacher obtain that funding could help many children for years to come.
