Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Brookings District Curriculum

As this school district has an uninterrupted instructional block in reading in the elementary grades, reading is also taught in conjunction with all of the subjects. Using reading instruction during history and science, as well as any supplementary courses, gives the students exposure to non-fiction texts and aids in the practice of comprehension and fluency. Writing is also taught so that students are able to provide written responses within any subject area.

In Math, technology is utilized as well as hands-on learning with the use of manipulatives. Students learn about geometry and measurement, algebraic patterns and relationships, and data analysis techniques over the years. The use of technology when teaching math assists the instructors in delivering modern, fresh instruction to the students of Brookings. It can help students see a range of practical applications for math and become an area that students wish to pursue in their studies.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the Intermediate Art Teacher

The middle school art teacher, teaching the intermediate grade levels, teaches the students all aspects of the fine art of drawing, sculpting, feeling and emotions with artistry, and painting. All of these are on so many levels, and the great advantage about being an art teacher is that all the students can learn at their own pace. There is no standardized testing in art, and many children enjoy having the time of the day to be creative and relax. Art teachers are very popular because of this! The middle school art teacher is responsible for preparing students who show a true talent and interest for the next level.
