Keeping Informed: Recent Eagan Educational News
- District #196 Celebrates 20 Years of Reading Initiative - In November, District #196 celebrated 20 years since Julie Olson brought Reading Recovery services to first grade students who were not reaching their age benchmarks for reading. Since its inception, more than 75% of students have improved their reading to reach their own grade levels and the majority of those students maintain this success over the course of their academic careers. This is an accelerated program that students are not meant to stay in forever but one that is best utilized in early years of learning.
- Band Selected for Rose Parade - The Rosemount High School Marching Band has been chosen to march and perform in the 2014 Rose Parade in California. They were selected based on their own submitted video application. They were one of possibly only 25 bands to be selected from throughout the country, a very high honor. The district is proud of this accomplishment!
- Runners Qualify for State Race - Members of both the Eagan girls' cross country team and the Rosemount boys' cross country team qualified to race in the state meet. They represent the very best long distance runners in the district when they travel to compete against others at the state level.

Chalk Talk: How to Communicate Effectively Via Email
In this world of rapidly changing technology, communicating through email has become commonplace. The problem is, communication through the written word can often be misconstrued. So, in this world of fast-paced written communication, how can we best educate our children about ways they can communicate effectively?
First, ask them to read their work out loud. This will often show them if a tone is conveyed that they did not mean. Second, ask children to use the spell checker and grammar checker on their email communications, to increase credibility. Finally, teach children to speak in a respectful manner and to use that same manner in email communications to avoid conflict.
