Chalk Talk: Being Well Rested for School
Many factors can affect students' performance in school; the amount of time spent studying, nutrition, stress and sleep are a few examples. Students, especially teen students, sometimes overlook the last one, sleep. Since natural circadian rhythms (sleep patterns) shift during adolescence toward a later sleep and wake time, it can be difficult for many middle and high school students to get enough sleep. Some good practices for getting enough shut eye include establishing a set bed and wake time; cutting out caffeine, exercise, TV and computers a few hours before bedtime; and designating the bedroom as a dark and quiet haven reserved only for snoozing.
