Portland District and Curriculum

Portland Public Schools know that an innovative, Common Core Curriculum is the surest way to produce success for its students on a consistent basis. In 2010, Oregon adopted Common Core State Standards (CCSS), to the great benefit of both students and educators. The CCSS finds its strength in four main essentials: well-defined content and skill standards, inventive and proven instructional strategies for educators, relevant and quality curriculum materials, and the use of common assessments and assignments to monitor and evaluate progress of students.

We currently cover the following Portland-area school district: Portland Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Portland District Curriculum

Portland’s schools utilize not only the sequential building of courses, but the implementation of complementary courses within grade levels, in order to create a stronger foundation for learning comprehension. For example, what students learn in Algebra may be able to be applied to lessons in Physics taken during the same year, thus building skills on multiple levels. Likewise, courses such as Humanities, Social Studies, and History can all be assisted by essential writing skills learned in English and Composition classes taught within the same grade year.

In the areas of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, and all other disciplines with comprehensible content, PPS also offers instructional resources for teachers and students, aimed at bringing out the best in both groups. Among these tools are the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) and GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) strategies. These methods help students develop an academic language used to boost comprehension in academic classes.

Keeping Informed: Recent Portland Educational News

  • School Modernization Becomes a Reality - In 2013, Roosevelt High School is going to be seeing historic and much-anticipated changes, thanks to a $482 million dollar construction bond, approved by a two-thirds majority. Planning for the modernization began in Spring of 2012, with construction expected to begin in January of 2015. With the community oversight committee being put in place to ensure transparency and accountability, the bond committee can be assured that the money is truly being used for the betterment of all Portland Public School students, and the families and students of PPS can look forward to learning in this new, state-of-the-art facility. A web page, Twitter feed, and Facebook page will be used by PPS to update the community on the exciting new changes as they progress.
  • Summer Meal Program - It's never too early in the year to start thinking about the Summer Meal Program available to all Oregon kids and teens aged 1-18. The reality is that many children just aren't able to get the nutrition they need during the Summer months when school is out. In 2010 alone, the Summer Meals Program fed 1.8 million children in Oregon, many of those in the Portland Public School district alone. But with help from Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon, you can find a meal site near you, volunteer to help, donate, or even sponsor a Summer Meal Program.
  • Cesar E. Chavez Leadership Conference - The 23rd annual CECLC will be held at Western Oregon University and, over the years, the conference has helped young Latino and Latina students develop their minds, bodies, and spirits, while focusing on building community, civic responsibility, and social consciousness. The 2012 conference saw over 1,500 students, educators, presenters, and exhibitors take part, and 2013 hopes to surpass that. Again, there will be exciting Art, Essay, and Poetry contests for students to enter and compete in for prizes.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Family in Learning

As a child grows and learns, their needs change. And as a parent, it's not always easy to keep up with those changes. Many communities now offer assistance to families in keeping in tune with a child's needs, while keeping in step with tools that help foster a strong, lifelong learning environment. With many school districts now offering free workshops, events, resources, and guidance, you can help become an active partner in shaping and encouraging your child's success. As parents, you can trust the school to be working on the core academic education of your child, which means that you can promote their learning in areas of real personal interest - art classes, robotics leagues, and so on. Providing children with opportunities to learn that they enjoy is one of the surest ways to create a lifelong learner.
