Eugene District and Curriculum
Proud to be known as a student-centered district, Eugene schools focus on identifying, addressing, and empowering the needs of each child. As such, Eugene district schools adhere to the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (OAKS) to assess development and progress, as well as areas for improvement, in student learning. Grades 3-8, as well as high school, are tested in the areas of Reading, Mathematics, and Science in order to meet the Oregon Standards. Writing is also tested for high school students.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Eugene District Curriculum
In addition to OAKS, many Eugene district schools participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which is administered in subject areas such as Reading, Science, Math, Writing, and History (US). This assessment is given to 4th, 8th, and 12th graders. Math and Science are also tested, though less frequently and in fewer Eugene schools, using The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). School participation is based on the Oregon Department of Education.
With these programs set in place, Eugene schools can ensure that both teacher and student achievement measures continuously grow, create and reinforce a common language for education throughout the district. Such a clear outline of expectations promotes professional excellence in our teachers, as well as student learning. The systems are measured by the Interstate Teaching Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC).

- National FAFSA Completion Pilot Project - The Eugene School District is very proud to be one of only 110 school districts, nationwide, participating in the National FAFSA Completion Pilot Program. The main focus of this program is to provide ample opportunity for students to have college and career training, as well as financial aid options, and is set to begin in January 2013. Parents and students will be given additional direction, support, and resources in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA), helping to ensure that those students who want to take that next step into a college will be ready and able!
- Kendall Drive For Education - Thanks to a new partnership between Kendall Toyota and Eugene area schools, the 4J School District will be seeing an extra $12,000 each month of the 2013 school year! Monies will be used primarily to keep all materials updated throughout district schools, as students face challenging academic requirements including, preparation for college Math.
- South Eugene High School Ranked in Top Oregon High Schools List - Year after year, U.S. News and World Report leads the field in identifying the best of the best when it comes to education. In 2012, 76 Oregon schools made the rankings. With an overall national rank of #185, South Eugene High School placed 4th in the Oregon State Best, partly due to good student-to-teacher ratios (20:1), and the availability of the International Baccalaureate Program, which allows students to take advanced coursework and exams.

Chalk Talk: Tips on Choosing a Tutor for a Student with a Learning Disability
Parents of children with Learning Disabilities often see them fall behind in school, or worse, fall between the cracks with their challenges unidentified and unnoticed. In many cases, a great option can be to hire a tutor trained in helping students regain not only a passing grade point average, but also confidence in themselves. Some tutors can be used to help reinforce challenging subjects, but can also assist in teaching a child to work independently. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children and explain why they think a tutor might be needed, and what a tutor does. Recommendations for tutors can be gotten from teachers and other educators, but also through other parents or resources that might be provided by the school district. Be sure to thoroughly check the tutor's credentials, set clear goals, obtain the tutor's lesson plan, ask for progress updates or reports from both your child and the tutor, and try to spend some time observing your child with the tutor. Children with Learning Disabilities may need to have more than one tutoring session per week, since time, repetition and constant practice often makes the all the difference.
