Waltham District and Curriculum

The Waltham Public School adopted City Wide Learning Standards that are aligned to the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework. The framework is also aligned with the 21st Century Skills expectations for technology and communication learning. Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessments are given in each school to assess the academic progress of students in core subject areas, to ensure that they are achieving each standard of learning, and to determine that classes and grade levels are being taught effectively.

We currently cover the following Waltham-area school district: Waltham Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Waltham District Curriculum

Waltham has implemented the Common Core Standards Initiative. The resources used in the initiative are research based tools. The resources are: ESE Resources, Diving Deeper: Implementing 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Math, Diving Deeper: Implementing 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for English Language Arts and Literacy, and Common Core Standards Implementation Workbook. These guide the instructional planning for grade- or subject-specific teaching and learning.

The district is also using a Transition Assessment Plan and 4 Draft Model Curriculum Unit. Implementation of the 4 Draft Model has included various educators throughout the state of Massachusetts so that best practices are achieved in different subjects. Educators redesigned the Math and Language Arts standards to implement more rigorous expectations. As a result of the 4 Draft Model, students will be expected to perform and be assessed at a higher level.

Chalk Talk: What to Do About Summertime..?

There is much debate about the amount of learning that is lost during the Summer. Oftentimes, many students lose significant academic gains achieved during the school year. Many of those students are at-risk or struggling learners. Summer programs would help these students retain information and remain competitive with their peers during the school year. Parents should continue to challenge their children academically during the summer months. The best way to achieve this is through summer programs provided through school, local community or other alternative programs.
