Southwest Guilford Elementary School is located on 4372 SW School Rd, High Point, NC 27265, Southwest Guilford Elementary School covers grades PreK-5 and can be contacted at 336-819-2992. The school is an Honor School of Excellence, named by North Carolina Public Schools. Staff provide students with a rigorous curriculum, and emphasis is placed on service learning and serving the community. The mission of the school is to help students develop the attitudes, behaviours and cognitive skills they need to be responsible citizens. Southwest Guilford Elementary School is also located next to Southwest Middle and High School. Like other schools in North Carolina, students at Southwest Guilford Elementary School are taught a curriculum that includes the K-12 standards set out by the State Board of Education in North Carolina. In grade 2 mathematics, students learn about algebraic thinking involving addition and subtraction, measurement and data, and geometry. The goal of the curriculum is to give students a strong foundation in mathematics, and encourage students to practice reasoning, and using mathematics to create models. Southwest Guilford Middle School is located on 441 Mills Park Dr, Cary, NC 27519, Southwest Guilford Middle School covers grades 6-8 and can be contacted at 336-819-2985. The school originally opened in 1992, and today has an enrollment of over 1100 students. The school features a large spacious gymnasium, an outdoor classroom, computer labs, and a large multipurpose room with a stage. The mission statement of Southwest Guilford Middle School is to prepare students for high school and create a safe environment where students can be in a community of learners that encourages academic, personal, and social growth. The mascot of the school is the Cowboy. The curriculum taught at Southwest Guilford Middle School includes the K-12 standards designed by the North Carolina’s State Board of Education. These standards provide a set of learning standards for students in the state, and define the knowledge that students should have and what they should be able to do. The goal of the standards is to prepare students to be ready for college and a career. The standards cover arts education, career and technical education, English as a second language, English language arts, Healthful living, Information and Technology skills, mathematics, science, social studies, and world languages. In middle school, students take a variety of courses, and by doing this, they can learn which subjects they like best and what interests them. Southwest Guilford High School is located on 4364 Barrow Rd, High Point, NC 27265, Southwest Guilford High School covers grades 9-12 and can be contacted at 336-819-2970. Found close to Southwest Guilford Elementary and Southwest Guilford Middle School, Southwest Guilford High School was originally established in 1979, and had an enrollment of 1597 students in the 2016-2017 school year. Some recent renovations have added more classrooms, a media center, and a gymnasium, which is the largest high school gym in Guilford County to the school. Southwest Guilford High School’s mascot is the Cowboy/Cowgirl, and the school’s colours are Green and Black. The school is known for its athletics program, whose teams have claimed state championships in nine different sport. Grade 9 students entering Southwest Guilford High School are separated into a Freshman Academy. As students entering high school, grade 9 students can be more nervous, as they are not sure what to expect from high school. Students in the Freshman Academy are put into a Freshman Class, where students can develop character, learning, and life skills. Students also work with a 9th grade counselor. After attending high school, many student make the decision to attend a postsecondary institution. For most students, the application process comes with taking SAT or ACT tests. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the High Point District Curriculum
The Guilford County Schools Reading curriculum consists of a stair-stepping process for students to get them from one level to the next successfully. Students learn how to decode and analyze meaning, and discuss or write about their interpretations. This process takes place throughout their school years. The students are to be fully prepared for reading on a college level by using of a variety of classics and contemporary texts.
The Reading curriculum is decided on by the school districts, teachers and state as a coming together to make sure that every student is able to read at their grade levels. The genres consist of a plethora of titles in forms of documents, writings by famous and not so famous authors, and American and world literature. Making sure that students are able to read on advanced levels is going to help them to better understand whatever they choose to read at any given time.

Keeping Informed: Recent High Point Educational News
- High School News - Students in the graduating class have already received college letters of acceptance and many have been offered generous scholarship awards. The time during which students are applying to college and receiving their responses is a powerful experience and deserves recognition for all the students’ hard work.
- Community Foundation Honored - The High Point Community Foundation has been the Guilford County Schools School District biggest supporter in their student programs and the curriculum, the group was recognized at a Guilford Board Meeting for their continued efforts.
- Parent Academy Resources - Parents that have students attending schools in the GCS District now have access to additional resources on a 24/7 basis. These new resources are not only school based but provide information on other topics of interests that affect their children and their education.

About High Point, North Carolina
The city of High Point is located in the Piedmont Triad of North Carolina. High Point extends into four counties. Most of the city is in Guilford County, but some portions are also in Randolph, Davidson, and Forsyth Counties. The city is known for its furniture, textiles and bus manufacturing, and because of this, one of High Point’s nicknames is “Home Furnishings and Hosiery Capital of the World”. The official slogan of High Point is “North Carolina’s International City” because of the semi-annual High Point Furniture Market that attracts 100,000 exhibitors and buyers from around the world to the city.
Historically, High Point’s location at the highest point of the 1856 North Carolina Railroad between Charlotte and Goldsboro and its intersection with the 1852 Great Western Plank Road allowed for easy delivery of raw materials such as cotton and number in and out of the city. This helped contribute to the city’s early growth .The city was incorporated in 1859. Before High Point became a major manufacturing center, the most important industries were tobacco, woodworking and textiles. The first furniture factory in high point was opened in 1889.
In 2017, the population of High Point was 111,513, making it the ninth most populated city in the state of North Carolina. 24.8% of the population was under 18, 23.6% of the population was between 18-34, 27.5% was 35-54, 11.0% was 55-64 and 13.2% was over the age of 65. The median household income in the city was $43,322 in 2017.
High Point City Lake Park
High Point City Lake Park is one of the public parks in the city of High Park. It is open daily for boating and fishing. Visitors can also enjoy picnics and playing on the playground. There are also 10 picnic shelters in the park that range in capacity from 40-600 people. If a large number of people don’t need to be accomodated, there are standing picnic tables and grills that are available as well. In addition, High Point City Lake Park is home to one of the largest swimming pools in the Southeast. In addition, there are 2 water slides, and visitors can take swim lessons, reserve a cabana, or rent the space for a private party.
World’s Largest Chest of Drawers
As an ode to the city’s and fame in furniture making, High Point is also the home of the World’s Largest Chest of Drawers. There are actually 2 huge sets of drawers in the city. One of them is styled in a 19th century way, and stands 36 feet high. 2 large socks also hang from the drawers in reference to the hosiery industry. The original chest was built in 1926 by the High Point Chamber of Commerce, and rebuilt again in 1950 and completely renovated into the current chest. The other huge chest of drawers in the city is by Furnitureland South. This drawer is over 80 feet tall! However, it is not freestanding, and is attached to the big furniture store.
All-A-Flutter Butterfly Farm
The All-A-Flutter Butterfly Farm offers tours of its facilities for groups of 20 or more. If visitors are in a smaller group, they can attend one of the farm’s family shows, which are offered every Saturday. The farm is located in the country close to nature. Younger visitors will enjoy playing in the grassy fields and in the play areas. The farm is also a good location for picnics. The main attraction of the farm is the butterflies. The show starts off with a skit, where audience members learn about the parts of a butterfly, their life cycle, their migration, differences between butterflies and moths, and what caterpillars eat. In addition, visitors also have the opportunity to see eggs, caterpillars and chrysalis up close, along with also getting a chance to hand feed the butterflies.

- The city hosts an annual Shakespeare Festival, called “NC Shakes”. This event includes summer camps, classes, and workshops in theater and arts education.
- High Point is located in a prime location as it’s close to major airports in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro. It’s also an easy drive to the beach or mountains from the city.
- The city is home to one university: High Point University, which is a private university founded in 1924.
- The daily newspaper published in High Point is the High Point Enterprise, which was established in 1885.
- One notable person born in High Point is Fantasia Barrino, who was the 2004 American Idol winner.
