Pittsburgh District and Curriculum
The Pittsburgh Public School District follows a new K-12 curriculum based on the Pennsylvania State Standards in Literacy (English and Language Arts) and Mathematics. Students learn how to use information in content areas and literature, effective verbal and written communication, and many ways to solve problems.
We currently cover the following Pittsburgh-area school district: Pittsburgh Public Schools.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pittsburgh District Curriculum
The core learning areas are intended to support each other, although they are each taught as distinct subjects. The objective for Pittsburgh students is to apply literacy skills to study Math, Science and Social Studies and other areas of learning. The Math curriculum brings out abstract and quantitative reasoning abilities for students and in Science students develop a scientific way of seeing the world.
The goal is for students to be prepared for their adult lives, whether they choose to go to college or enter the workforce right after high school. They are expected to apply concepts and skills they are learning in mathematics to solve everyday problems. For example, a high school geometry student learning the relationships between size and area can use that knowledge to figure out how much material to buy to build a house. Abstract theories are connected in a “toolbox” of strategies to use in the real world.

Chalk Talk: Why Are Literacy and Math Essential Learning?
Students often ask questions like "Why do I have to study algebra?' or "Why do I have to read this play?" This is especially true when they plan to go right into the workforce after high school. While the boss may not test employees on solving quadratic equations or the cast of characters in Romeo and Juliet, he or she will expect workers to be able to follow directions in a manual, use strategies to troubleshoot problems, or apply what they learn in new situations. At the heart of all these abilities are literacy and math knowledge.
