Chalk Talk: 3 Tips for Parents to Teach Healthy Study Habits to Teens
In the busy life of a teen, sleep often gets short-changed in the contest between studying, sleep, and a social life. Unfortunately, even putting studying before sleep can be detrimental to overall learning. Studies have shown that students who sacrifice sleep have more difficulty retaining new material and perform poorly on tests and assignments on days following sleep-deprived nights. But parents can help their children navigate the sleep-deprived waters with the implementation of three simple tips: 1) Set a schedule for studying, 2) Eliminate distractions such as cell phones, TV, and Facebook, and 3) Know your teen’s focus limits and break-up longer study sessions into smaller, more manageable chunks accordingly. Being proactive and having a plan will help enable your teen to go the distance, both in school and in life.
