North Tonawanda District and Curriculum
The North Tonawanda City School District oversees one pre-kindergarten, five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The stated mission for the district, which includes more than 4,000 students, is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to reach their educational potential through challenging and engaging learning opportunities. The schools are using the Common Core Curriculum Framework and require students to pass Regent’s Exams in English, US History, Global History, Science and Math.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the North Tonawanda District Curriculum
In English and Language Arts, students are expected to focus on the basic progressive elements of reading, writing, listening, speaking and showing control of the English language. An emphasis is placed on being able to ask and answer questions about reading material, a skill which becomes more complex as students take on more difficult reading material in fiction and nonfiction.
In Math, students begin the process of becoming mathematically literate by learning the fundamentals of mathematical computation, measurement, and basic algebra and geometry. In high school students take Algebra and Geometry and can also take Algebra II, Calculus, Trigonometry, and Statistics. The curriculum for Math is concentrated on fundamental mathematical skills so that students can gain a deeper skill level in the material that is presented.

Keeping Informed: Recent North Tonawanda Educational News
- Art Exhibit - The hallways, foyer and board room of the North Tonawanda School District administration building have become an art gallery. Student art work is now on display and will be rotated throughout the year. If you check it out you will find a variety of art forms including skulls and skeletons from a recent project at the Spruce Elementary School who created artwork in connection with the Mexican Day of the Dead. There are also paintings, line drawings and photography from all grade levels.
- Technology Grant - The Meadow and Ohio Elementary Schools will be able to purchase 80 new computers thanks to a Technology Grant from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. The computers will be installed in min-computer labs for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders.Lowe’s gave a $98,270 grant to the schools which has allowed for the purchase of desks, chairs and a variety of technical equipment needed in the schools.
- Teacher of Week - Students at the North Tonawanda Middle School surprised their teacher Michelle Watson by nominating her for the Teacher of Week Award given out by WKBW Channel 7. Ms. Watson was totally surprised to have a visit from the station along with a cameraman as she was presented with the award. She was nominated for her ability to help students understand math.

Chalk Talk: Resources for Budding Astronomers
The StarChild website for kids that is sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has everything to inspire kids who are fascinated by outer space. There is information on the solar system, stars, and other ‘space stuff.’ Kids can play the “Question of the month’ space game and other fun games about space and astronomy. There is a learning center for young astronomers with information on how to become an astronaut.
