Newburgh District and Curriculum
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District currently has more than 11,000 students enrolled in its twelve schools. All of the district’s elementary schools are Schools of Choice where both traditional and non-traditional ways of learning are used. Non-traditional learning options are also available at the secondary level. The district does adhere to the Common Core Curriculum Framework which has been adopted and approved by the New York State Board of Regents.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Newburgh District Curriculum
The English and Language Arts Curriculum in the district centers on the Common Core principles of learning how to read, write, listen and speak in the English language. Research skills are also stressed including the ability to evaluate reference material including websites. In Math, the evidence and research based the curriculum is focused on helping students become mathematically literate. Overall the strategy is to focus on fewer subjects so that the math material which is studied can be absorbed and students can become confident in their ability to understand and use math.
Any student wanting to graduate with a diploma from a New York State public school is required to pass five Regents exams in the following courses: Math, Science, Global History, U.S. History and English. To obtain an Advanced Regents Diploma students must also learn a foreign language and take two additional Regents exams in Math and Science.

Keeping Informed: Recent Newburgh Educational News
- Community Outreach - Students at the Fostertown ETC Magnet School recently ran a drive to collect non perishable food items and paper products for families who were affected by Super Storm Sandy. The drive took place shortly after the storm and the items were delivered to the families with the help of the Battalion 3 Fire Department in Newburgh.
- Math & Science Night - An Annual Math & Science Night was held in during the winter for more than 200 students and family members of the New Windsor School. A variety of math and science activities kept everyone busy with games like Brown Bear Graphing, Sports Freefall, Going Buggy, Addition Bowling, and Candy Math.
- Compact Committee - The Compact Committee is an organization consisting of members of the educational community who want to be involved in an advisory role in the school district's policy-making. Events and meetings held throughout the year offer parents a unique way to contribute to the best education for Newburgh's kids.
