Paducah District and Curriculum

Paducah Public Schools follow the curriculum set out by the Kentucky Department of Education which outlines all areas of instruction that should be covered in core subjects. There are initiatives to ensure that these areas are covered such as PERKS (Program Effectiveness Review for Kentucky Schools), a program in Math that is in effect in the schools and is a checklist of Math practices that schools should follow. The ability to teach oneself is essential. Students must be able to read, listen, explore, and follow directions to understand key concepts. Application of these skills in school can give teachers an opportunity to address gaps in understanding, confusion, or misconceptions.

We currently cover the following Paducah-area school district: Paducah Public Schools.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Paducah District Curriculum

In the schools in Paducah, the English Language Arts curriculum is about teaching your child to read, write, speak, listen, observe, inquire and use technology to communicate. Writing is very important and the Kentucky writing program is in place wherein teachers use a department program that guides them to analyze your child’s writing and communication abilities. There are numerous reading and writing core concepts expected at each grade level and the goals of the program in your child’s classroom are for your child to learn to apply their abilities.

The goals in Mathematics include teaching each child the basic math skills and teaching them to apply them. In elementary school students are taught to add, subtract, multiply and divide. For example, in grade two, use of numbers for adding and subtracting is expected. By eighth grade, algebra and geometry are often used. In high school, the curriculum expands on these concepts.

The first step to helping your child become a better reader is to read to him or her. This can start even before he or she is born. Reading to a child throughout his or her early years is a good way to help him or her learn to read and to enjoy the printed word. Bedtime stories are wonderful. If you read to your child every night you will foster reading skills. The more your child reads and the more you read to your child, the more successful he or she will be in school.
