Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Radcliff District Curriculum

In English Language Arts emphasis is on learning to read, write, speak, listen, inquire, observe and use technology to communicate. Students read fiction, non-fiction and many other types of text. They are taught to apply what they have read throughout the grades. Knowledge and reasoning targets are delineated in the curriculum and teachers work to have your child meet these. Writing is very important in the schools and students are encouraged to write and their product is assessed regularly.

In Mathematics in Radcliff goals are set and teachers work to have your child meet these goals. Core Math skills are taught and students learn to apply them. In early elementary school, students learn about numbers and progressively how to use them to add, subtract, multiply, divide and use fractions. Algebra and geometry are introduced in early elementary school and by late high school are fully realized in the curriculum.

Chalk Talk: How to Include Parents In Your Education

Parents are a big part of your education and they need to be included as much as possible. Talk to them about your homework and your school issues. They will be pleased to be in the loop. One tip that works as you go through high school is to treat them like your friends. When you have an issue, invite them either together or separately to ‘go for coffee’. You will be amazed at how this simple thing works. Just go for coffee and talk like friends. No shouting, no blaming – just good talk. Try it – it is simple but it works.
