Chalk Talk: History Resources for Kids
A way to engage children in history and colonial times is to have them visit the Martha Washington ‘Cooking with Martha Washington’ exhibit at the Mount Vernon Estate in Mount Vernon, Virginia. If that is not possible you can see the exhibit in action at the KidsUSA site for videos. What you will find at the site is a discussion with Curator Susan Schoelwer as she shows you different kitchen items that were actually used in Martha Washington’s kitchen. You will see a mortar and pestle, copper pots used to make jam and jellies and even a heart shaped waffle iron.
