Chalk Talk: Teaching Your Child to Resolve Conflicts

Resolving conflicts is a skill that everyone needs, and your student can begin practicing this while still in school. When your child has a conflict with someone else at school, encourage him or her to talk about it. Validate the emotions that are expressed. Help him or her to see things from the other person’s perspective. If your child needs to improve in a certain area, guide him or her in finding ways to make positive changes. Role-play what he or she should say to the other person. Let the child know that a teacher should be notified immediately if the other person becomes verbally abusive or combative. Lastly, be sure to follow up with the conflict to be sure that it was resolved.
