Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cincinnati District Curriculum

The Language Arts Standards promote phonemic awareness, word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, reading, and writing. In the upper grade levels, the curriculum includes research and presentations. Reading is taught so that students gain the comprehension strategies to take away meaning from texts of all genres. The writing component to the curriculum helps students develop the skills to write in styles such as expository, persuasive, and reflective.

The Mathematics Standards, also introduced to the Cincinnati Public Schools in 2002, require graduating students to be comfortable with operations, measurement, geometry, patterns, functions, algebra, and data analysis and probability. The Science curriculum builds on the Math curriculum by requiring students to apply problem-solving skills to applications in earth science, physical science, and life science. Technology is also an area of instruction and students learn about how it works and how it has changed our society.

I enjoy teaching preschoolers. I believe each child are different in their own way and need to be taught as a individual, meaning teaching each child in a way that they can understand it and learn it. My focus is to make sure that each child is getting enough knowledge to move on to Kindergarten. I will give that child my positive support and learning environment.
Rather than teaching isolated facts, students should be led to “connect the dots” so as to recognize patterns and concepts. The educator must help the student feel comfortable in in dealing with controversial matters.
I believe as a teacher that you meet a child where he is and take him/her as far as he/she can go. I believe that each learner has a particular method by which they learn best, so do try to incorporate visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods in my teaching.

Chalk Talk: Building Your Vocabulary

Having the perfect word at your fingertips is essential for success in college, career, and beyond. But how can you build your vocabulary? The best way to increase your knowledge of words is by reading. Don’t skim over words that you don’t know. Stop, and use the context of the sentence to try to figure the word out. Make an educated guess about its meaning, and then look it up to see if you are right. You can use an old-fashioned dictionary, or you can look it up online. Surprisingly, studying a language such as Latin, Spanish, French, or German can actually help you learn English words. You will learn the roots of English words, making it much easier to figure out a new word from its context. Once you learn a new word, use it! Using it in your writing and every-day conversation will help you to commit it to memory.
