The school offers a rigorous curriculum in the core subjects of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. In English Language Arts, each student takes quarterly benchmarks to help teachers identify their individual needs. In mathematics, students use the same textbook series from kindergarten through eighth grade. These textbooks are aligned with the National and Ohio Standards and students also take quarterly benchmarks in mathematics in help teachers identify their needs. The Ohio Education Standards outline the knowledge students should have at the end of each grade level. For example, students in third grade mathematics learn about operations and algebraic thinking. The school was the third district public high school established in Cincinnati, and is a college preparatory school. 87% of the students at Walnut Hills High School enter college with advanced standing, and historically the school has placed first in the state on the Ohio Proficiency Test. The school also offers an Advanced Placement Program offering 30 courses. The cultural arts program at the school is well established, and presents five dramatic/musical products each year. The school is also home to award winning bands and orchestras. Students can choose to participate in one of the 90 competitive sports teams and over 50 extra-curricular activities. In addition, students at the school participate in science and foreign language competitions, the national mathematics examination, first lego robotics, Model United Nations, and the National Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Cincinnati District Curriculum

The Language Arts Standards promote phonemic awareness, word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, reading, and writing. In the upper grade levels, the curriculum includes research and presentations. Reading is taught so that students gain the comprehension strategies to take away meaning from texts of all genres. The writing component to the curriculum helps students develop the skills to write in styles such as expository, persuasive, and reflective.

The Mathematics Standards, also introduced to the Cincinnati Public Schools in 2002, require graduating students to be comfortable with operations, measurement, geometry, patterns, functions, algebra, and data analysis and probability. The Science curriculum builds on the Math curriculum by requiring students to apply problem-solving skills to applications in earth science, physical science, and life science. Technology is also an area of instruction and students learn about how it works and how it has changed our society.

Cincinnati is located in Hamilton County on the Northern side of the junction of the Licking and Ohio Rivers. Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

The Cincinnati Zoo is the second oldest zoo in the United States having being opened in 1875. It is well known for its breeding programs for endangered species, and houses over 500 animals and 3000 plant species. The zoo was the first to successfully breed California Sea Lions. Martha, the last living passenger pigeon, and Incas, the last living Carolina Parakeet, lived at the Cincinnati Zoo before their deaths. The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden receives about 1.2 million visitors annually. Fiona, a famous hippo born on January 24, 2017, was mothered by Bibi, a resident of the zoo. She was the first Nile Hippo to ever be captured on an ultrasound image. Fiona was also born 6 weeks prematurely, and zookeepers were unsure if she would survive. After much care, she survived. Today, Fiona and her mother still live at the Cincinnati Zoo. In 2014, USA Today ranked the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden among the best zoos in the country.

Smale Riverfront Park

Smale Riverfront Park is a popular park located in downtown Cincinnati. There are a variety of things for all ages of people to do at the park. One of the attractions in the park is Carol Ann’s Carousel. Visitors can ride on a ladybug, bengal tiger, and many more animals! Younger visitors can stop by the Heeken Family / PNC Grow Up Great Adventure Playground. There’s a rope bridge, wooden climbing structures and walls, hiding places, and squishy soft surfaces to protect kids from falls. Visitors wishing to cool down can enjoy the water activities offered at the park such as the fountains and splash pad. There is also a labyrinth visitors can challenge themselves with. After a fun day at the park, there are various restaurants located nearby to choose from.

American Sign Museum

The American Sign Museum is dedicated to showcasing American Signs from 1870 to 1970. Walking through the museum allows visitors to take a trip through time as they observe the museum’s collection of over 200 signs. The collection at the museum includes pieces such as the gold leaf glass signs of the early 1900s, a collection of neon signs from the 1930s to 1940s, and plastic signs from the 50s. The museum includes 19,000 square feet of exhibit space, including with a working neon shop and unique event space. Highlights of the sign collection include a rotating neon windmill from a Denver Donut ship and a Fiberglass statue of Frisch’s Big Boy.
