New Castle District and Curriculum
The New Castle Area School District curriculum represents a collaboration between students, parents, teachers, and the community to achieve excellence for every student. Pennsylvania Core State Standards in Reading/Literacy, Math, Social Studies, and Science prepare students to take their places in post-secondary academics.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the New Castle District Curriculum
Through the broad curricular experience, students are introduced to fundamental concepts which help them build important critical thinking skills. In Language Arts, students develop abilities to analyze and evaluate information. In Math, students gain the background for logical or abstract reasoning. The Sciences help students understand principles of life, earth, space and greater complexities of the natural world while developing critical thought about scientific hypotheses and theories.
A unique feature of New Castle Area School District is its focus on community participation at every grade level as students learn key skills. Students learn how to be responsible citizens in a democracy through studying history and by participation in student government. For example, students in kindergarten learn who community helpers are as part of a social studies units, while a high school student might take part in a Sheriff’s Academy ride along as a senior project.

Keeping Informed: Recent New Castle Educational News
- History Students Shine in Essay Contest - Local sophomores in an Advanced Placement US History class swept the competition in a VFW contest, and will go on to the next round. They submitted written essays, and video students also taped the writers reading their own essays. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on the meanings of democracy.
- Blankets Warm Area Neighbors in Need - Student leaders at New Castle High School have organized a blanket collection to benefit needy neighbors with winter warmth. They have organized the drive during the holidays each year for the last 10 years.
- Students Attend Career Fair - Eighth graders from one of the New Castle Area School District middle schools had the opportunity to explore careers in health last November. They chose from presentations in behavioral health, anatomy, and were able to attend presentations from people already working in the healthcare field. In addition, the students were able to speak to representatives from colleges and universities that offered further training.

Chalk Talk: Making a Difference
One of the most exciting aspects of learning academic skills is using them in opportunities to help others. Even very young students can draw pictures and write thank-you notes for gifts they receive, and use math skills to help count and bag food at a local food bank. Older students may be able to volunteer at a shelter, join in community projects, or work in a nursing home or hospital. The leadership and social skills gained are worth more than the time spent on such projects.
