Kingston District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The Ontario Curriculum is used in the public schools of Kingston; this is the framework that organizes the subject areas into measurable skills and knowledge. The curriculum describes the range of topics that should be covered for a student to achieve proficiency in the subject area. Beyond the basic knowledge of a subject, students will also develop a range of higher order thinking skills like reasoning, computation, analysis and evaluation. The curriculum provides the standards of learning that students in Kingston, and throughout the province, will need to gain in order to be prepared for their future pursuits. The result is students that exit their K-12 education with a host of skills and in-depth knowledge that allows them to achieve their highest possible potential.
We currently cover the following Kingston-area school districts: Limestone District School Board and Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kingston District Curriculum
In English, critical reading and writing skills are developed and students come to understand how to make meaning from what they read. Setting, order of events, and how characters are introduced are elements students analyze to gain a deeper appreciation for story development. Students also work on identifying various literary tools that help provide humor to a story, including satire, sarcasm, and understatement. The development of the literary field is also explored. Students examine various works from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, particularly works by major authors.
In Math, all topics are taught and integrated with practical applications for their use. For instance, measurements of volume are then related to mathematical operations such as multiplication and addition. Students also learn how to convert among standard measurements and use this insight to solve real world problems. Addition and subtraction of fractions is covered as well, including those with like and unlike denominators. Multiplication and division of fractions is also undertaken.

Chalk Talk: Keeping Germs Out of the Classroom
It is nearly impossible to keep germs out of a classroom with 20-some students, but teachers and parents can take some steps to keep germs out as much as possible. Parents always have to make decisions whether to send their sick kids to school or not. Parents should keep students with highly contagious illnesses home from school to avoid spreading their germs to their classmates. Teachers, meanwhile, should always keep hand sanitizer and tissues in their classroom. They may even want to designate a student to pump hand sanitizer onto each student's hands every day. Parents and teachers need to encourage students to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze and to wash their hands before they eat, after using the restroom, and after sneezing or coughing into their hands. Remember, they should wash their hands for the amount of time it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice.
