Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Coatesville District Curriculum

In each subject there are benchmarks established to ensure that students are learning key skills and concepts. The benchmarks in Language Arts focus on the key components of reading, writing, speaking, and listening across all grades. Students learn how to read for meaning, express their interpretations, and develop their own ideas in writing and speech. In Math, the focus is on the growth of problem-solving skills across all the topics (algebra, geometry, quantitative data analysis) so that students may look at a problem and know the best way to solve it.

Students are individually assessed to determine their reading level, as well as what skills they need to develop over time, and there are special tools to identify the strengths and weaknesses of students. The myriad of testing tools used ensures a fuller picture of student achievement. A clear picture of what students need to learn to pass an Advanced Placement test at the end of an advanced English course in high school helps teachers know what should be included in the coursework.

Chalk Talk: Why 'Practice Makes Perfect'

The best way to improve in any given sport is to practice the skills that are needed that they become second nature. Psychologists call that overlearning, and it is an essential key to becoming an expert in any skill. Repeating something over and over, whether it is words in a language one is learning, shooting baskets over and over from the free-throw line, or practicing scales on the piano, these repetitive acts "impress" that activity into brain pathways.
