Baton Rouge District and Curriculum
The schools in Baton Rouge follow the Common Core Standards, a comprehensive framework in Math and Literacy, which is designed to teach students relevant skills that will properly prepare them for the future they choose. All core academic subjects are designed using grade-level expectations to support yearly progress. Beyond that, the schools have initiated many programs to suit the many interests of their students.
We currently cover the following Baton Rouge-area school districts: East Baton Rouge Parish Schools and West Baton Rouge Parish Schools.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Baton Rouge District Curriculum
As part of the Common Core Standards for English, students are taught to love learning by reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The ability to understand, analyze and evaluate text is the focus from elementary school through high school. Students learn ways to critically interpret texts and research topics of interest. Literacy is integrated with Social Studies and Science as students learn to interpret visual information in charts and graphs, as well as print and digital texts.
Mathematics in the early grades concentrates on number, operations, geometry and measurement. Students are then led to learn by discovery as they move on toward working with data, algebra, probability and statistics. Using real-world applications educates students to think creatively, solve problems and justify solutions. By the end of high school, the goal is to graduate students who are mathematically literate, able to creatively solve problems, and are experienced team members.

Keeping Informed: Recent Baton Rouge Educational News
- Give a Kid a Smile Day - Local Louisiana Dental Associations, Health Centers in Schools, and the school district collaborate to provide first and second graders with some big smiles. Services are provided free of charge, and are part of the charitable education, screening, prevention and comprehensive treatment programs already offered within the United States.
- Pink Robots Team News - An all-girl robotics team, The Pink Robots, participated in a Robotics Programming workshop with LEGO Mindstorm robots. Programming basic robotic movements, using sensors and a third motor were some of the challenges the team worked on during the workshop. Developing problem-solving skills is a major component of the Robotics team. Through exciting events such as this, girls are encouraged to enter the STEM careers of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics.
- Students Win State Artwork Contest - Three students from the East Baton Rouge School district won the Louisiana School Board Artwork Contest and now move forward to the State Competition. Artwork was to represent Louisiana, and was to be created by using acrylics, oils, charcoal or other approved art media. “Dancing Crawfish,” “Louisiana Delicacies,” and “Spicey Nuts” were among the winning products.

Fuel up your child with a healthy breakfast before school! Children can think better, which means higher grades in Math and Reading, when they eat breakfast. Blood sugar can drop significantly by mid-morning when students do not eat before leaving home in the morning. Although it is a busy time, eating breakfast is one way to help your child have a successful day! Setting the table the night before, leaving out necessary cereal boxes or fruit, can help busy families squeeze in a good breakfast as they prepare for the day. Make sure your child’s “fuel tank” is full rather than “empty” as they head out of the door for a day of learning!
