Educating Our Parents: Understanding the St. Louis District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum emphasizes the importance and joy of reading and writing, encouraging reading skills as students develop. Vocabulary skills are built in the early grades, and these skills are honed as students then progress to high school and begin analyzing texts and vocabulary independently. The focus on writing is also significant; students learn to write using a process that incorporates skills in preparing, organizing and revising written work.

In Mathematics, problem-solving and communication are used to inspire the connections that math has to everyday applications. Students are encouraged to employ mental work-out strategies that keep math skills sharp and to build reasonable independence from relying on calculators. By junior high and high school, students become adept at applying mathematical conjecture and use active class discussion to relate the power of math to science, social studies, art, and other subjects.

Chalk Talk: Useful Information for the Aspiring Paleontologist

One of the subjects that often draws young students into the world of science is paleontology. Many children are fascinated by dinosaurs and other extinct creatures from an early age, and naturally their curiosity presses them to learn more about the natural world. A paleontologist is a scientist who studies ancient life, and the field is made even more popular by movies and television shows featuring or hosted by these scientific individuals.

Learning never stops—paleontologists are always reading new books about their field, and writing about the scientific discoveries they make in the field. It is a lot of fun to dig for fossils, though it is also strenuous and you must be willing to spend long hours in the sun with plenty of sunscreen. Exercise is important, as paleontologists must walk long distances with heavy tools and backpacks full of plaster to make jackets for their fossil finds. It is an exciting field, and one that keeps presenting the thrill of discovery!
