La Vista District and Curriculum
The Papillion-La Vista Public Schools of Nebraska follow the comprehensive curriculum of the State of Nebraska. The core curriculum is comprised of Mathematics, Reading, Social Studies, and Science. Technology is incorporated into the teaching of all coursework in order to enhance student achievement and to vary the methods of instruction.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the La Vista District Curriculum
Within the core curriculum in grades K-12, Mathematics has learning standards such as the communication of number sense problems and concepts. Students are expected to use many means and tools to solve problems, to reason, make real world connections, and become able to apply math across all subject areas. Students will also interconnect geometric principles with measurement and number sense areas of learning in order to reason and solve problems.
In Reading, the K-12 curriculum comprises many layers of learning, and students grasp concepts such as reading a variety of texts with accurate, fluent reading pace and expression. They learn strategies to decode and derive meaning from all types of texts. In order to support their comprehension, students are taught to read phrases and clauses in such a way as natural speaking and expression. The students are also exposed to a large amount of vocabulary which will build their background knowledge and aid them in comprehension of all types of genres.

- Cooperation BEST - Since 1995, Cooperation BEST has been the school sponsor program for Papillion-La Vista school district. Many businesses are coupled with schools to help prepare students for the future. The Cooperation BEST communicates with organizations, and the businesses can give fundraising events for schools, come into the classrooms, and educate students on various aspects of the business world.
- Kids Club - Kids Club is a dynamic program full of educational experiences and serves grades K-6. Each elementary school in the district has a Kids Club, and the children get to experience hands-on learning, social time, and free play. This program is provided for students before and after school, and all day when school is not in session, as well as in the summer. In the summer, field trips are also provided.
- Swinging for Kids - The 27th Annual Fun Day is coming this summer, and being an annual event, it has grown in popularity. The Papillion-La Vista Schools celebrates the community and the school’s alumni by giving all of the money collected to the many student programs. In the putting challenge, all participants have an opportunity to gain $10,000 in a winning prize. This event aids in supporting programs that help the students with mentoring, outdoor education, scholarships, and teacher grants.

The math teacher in the primary grades is responsible for beginning the foundation that is needed for the students to build on in future years. If the younger students have a solid foundation of numbers and number sense they will be better prepared for the higher math that is in their future. The primary math instructor also must show the students how they can relate mathematical concepts to real world experiences, so that the math concepts they are learning will make more sense.
