Emma E. Booker Elementary School is located on 2350 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way Sarasota, FL 34234, Emma E. Booker Elementary School covers grades PreK-5.  Emma E. Booker Elementary School was named after Emma E. Booker, an African-American educator that began teaching at Sarasota County’s first black school in 1918. During the she took college classes and in 1923, she became principal of the school. In 1937 after 20 years of taking college classes in the summer, she obtained her Bachelor’s degree.

Sarasota High School is located on 3901 22nd Avenue South Saint Petersburg, FL 34239, Sarasota High School covers grades 9-12 and can be contacted at (941) 955-0181.  Sarasota High School was founded in 1913. In 1926, a newer school building designed by architect Paul Rudolph was completed to which the school moved to. In 1926, the school moved again to a new 85 acre site. The Sarasota High School Sailor circus is also well known. It first began as a mid game tumbling demonstration during a football game in 1949. Since then, it has evolved into a nearly full fledged circus of student performers trained and supervised by faculty and parents. The Sailor Circus has appeared on multiple TV problems ub traveled across the United States, Japan and Peru. Today, the Sailor Circus is no longer associated with Sarasota high school and is instead operated by the Circus Arts Conservatory.

Riverview High School is located on 1 Ram Way Sarasota FL 34238, Riverview High School covers grades 9-12. In the 2012-2013 school year, Riverview High School wa the largest school in the county with about 2654 students. The school offers an International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Riverview High School is also famous for its Riverview High School Kiltie Band, who have marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade 3 times and have also traveled to Ireland and California to perform. The previous main building at Riverview High opened in 1958 and was designed by architect Paul Rudolph. The building was one of the best known structures associated with the Sarasota School of Architecture style,before it was demolished in June 2009. A new school building then opened in August of that year.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Sarasota District Curriculum

Elementary Science students learn how scientific discoveries are made, how the earth was formed, what is beyond the earth, how objects interact with one another, and how living organisms survive. Middle school students learn basic physics, explore physical science, touch upon astronomy, get exposed to ecology, study meteorology, and comprehend basic chemistry. In high school, students deepen their knowledge gained over the previous years by taking specialized classes in the sciences.

The Language Arts curriculum starts elementary students with reading, listening, alphabetizing, comparing/contrasting, drawing conclusions, locating information, and writing. Middle school students move on to text features, reliability of information, and oral presentations. In high school, students gain an understanding of foreshadowing, setting, flashback, protagonists/antagonists, argument and support, bias, personification, tone, and symbolism.

Many of the homes and buildings in Sarasota are designed in the Italian style, likely influenced by John Ringling’s Cà d’Zan. The “Sarasota School of Architecture”, also known as Sarasota Modern,  is a style of architecture that emerged in 1941-1966. This style of architecture is characterized by open-plan structures often with large plants of glass to create natural lighting and ventilation.

According to a 2017 estimate, the population of Sarasota was 56 994, with a large majority of the population being older. The percentage of the population under the age of 18 was 24.1%, 13.6% was 25-34, 23.3% was 35-54, 9% was 55-64 and 25.2% was 65 and older. The median household income in the city was $43 477.

Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key Beach has a reputation as being one of America’s best beaches. The most famous feature of the beach is its sugar-like white sand. The sand is made up of 99% pure quartz and therefore will stay cool under your feet.  Located along the Gulf of Mexico, the beach is free to the public. Visitors can enjoy fishing, boating, parasailing, kayaking, snorkeling or swimming. For those who want to stay on the land, Siesta Key Beach also offers tennis and volleyball courts, a shaded playground and picnic area, and concession stands for a refreshing drink or snack. Nearby the beach there is also Siesta Key Village where many shops and restaurants can be found.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is dedicated to studying and displaying Epiphytes, which are organisms that grow on the surface of a plant and derive moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water or debris around it. The best known examples of Epiphytes are some species of mosses and orchids. Besides Epiphytes, the gardens also displays a variety of rare tropical plants, also being a world leader in the study and conservation of plants. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens houses more than 20 000 living plants including 5500 orchids. Located in the gardens is also an herbarium with dried and preserved specimens of tropical plants.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium

The Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium can be found on City Island in Sarasota. The organization is a non-profit, marine research based institution committed to the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans. The research at the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium was originally focused on sharks, but has since expanded to studies of human cancer using marine models, the effects of man-made and natural toxins on humans and the environment, the health of wild fisheries and more. The Mote Aquarium is the public outreach arm of the lab and display more than 100 marine species to the public. The species and ecosystems displayed are focussed around those studied by the scientists at the lab. Visitors can also see manatees, sharks, octopuses, sea turtles and more. The aquarium also features interactive exhibits and windows into the labs to make science accessible for people of all ages.

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art was originally established in 1927. In 2000 Florida State University assumed governance of the museum. The attraction was designed to be the official state art museum of Florida and houses European paintings, antiquities from Cyprus, and a variety of contemporary art. When John Ringling died in 1936, he donated his property and art collection to the state of Florida, which is where the museum gets its name and much of its collection from. Ringling was part of the Ringling brothers company who helped develop the largest circuses in the United states. A main focal point in the Museum’s property is the Ca’ d’Zan, which means “House of John” in the Venetian dialect. The Ca’ d’Zan was John and Mable’s house they built in the Venetian Gothic style.
