Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Greenville District Curriculum
Mathematics standards are founded on an evidence-based progression through whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. The secondary school standards apply these concepts and more complex algebraic and geometric concepts to real-world problems. Students are expected to develop the ability to think and reason using mathematical skills.
Critical content for English Language Arts curriculum includes Shakespeare, American literature, stories and myths from around the world, and founding US documents. Students build vocabulary and learn to use conventions appropriately. They work with language through reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and are required to demonstrate analytic and critical thinking skills as their comprehension improves. By Grade 12, students are expected to be able to evaluate information and sources, to engage deeply with complex texts, and to express themselves efficiently and effectively with words.

Chalk Talk: Your Child’s First Dance
Many children look forward to their first dance, which usually occurs in middle school. Boys and girls alike get excited and nervous in anticipation of this social event. Far from the prom, middle school dances can be short and simple. In some schools, a student may ask another student to be a date, but most middle-school students go in groups. The dances are often held in a cafeteria or gym and are held in the late afternoon or early evening. Most dances have a theme, and some require students to buy tickets.
Keep track of the school calendar so that you know when dances are approaching, and ask your child if he or she plans to go. If there is a theme or a dress code, make sure that your child has something appropriate to wear. Your child will need money for a ticket, and he or she may need extra money for refreshments, pictures or souvenirs. Make sure your child has a ride to and from the dance with a responsible adult, and set up a place and time for a pick-up. Empower your child by letting him or her know that you know that they are ready for this.
