Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lafayette District Curriculum
In Math, students learn to use numeracy, measurement, geometry, algebra, probability and statistics at each grade level. As students increase in knowledge and skill, analyzing and solving real-world problems is a strong focus. Developing critical thinking skills and creative ways of problem-solving is a goal that crosses all subject areas in school. The ability to use mathematic models, quantitative and abstract reasoning are also emphasized.
Advanced reading and writing skills are expected by the time students reach middle and high school. The ability to read and understand various types of text, visual and digital graphics and text is supported and encouraged. Working in teams, project-based learning and independent activities all rely on the ability to take in and use information. Writing skills are expected in all subject areas. Students are taught to write for a variety of purposes. Writing to learn and writing to inform are foundational skills that are learned from the early grades and onward.

- Two LPPS Schools Recognized for Performance and Teacher of the Year Awards - J. Chalk Talk: Ways to Help Your Child Get Better Grades
The older a child gets, the more they need family support. Many times, parents and family members allow middle school or high school students to “be on their own” with school assignments, organization, and responsibility. Sometimes we don’t realize our children are struggling until we start to see grades fall in school. How can we stop this from happening?
Make sure your child has a planner in his or her binder. Many schools provide one at the start of each school year. Ask your child to write down the assignments from each class, every day in the planner. Check for assignments every day, when your child gets home from school. Speak with your child’s teachers and make sure assignments finished at home get back to school in a timely manner. This may mean checking backpacks and folders until your child has developed the habit of always turning in work on time. In order to achieve success, families and teachers must work together as each child grows.
