Rye District and Curriculum
Within the Rye City School District the Elementary Schools and Middle School are all New York State Schools of Excellence while the High School is ranked 72nd in the United States according to U.S. News and World Report. All schools in the Rye City School District stress academic excellence and the mastery of academic subjects including Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The Rye City School District follows the state approved Common Core Curriculum which was mandated by the New York State Board of Regents.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rye District Curriculum
The elementary school program focuses on the fundamentals of reading and writing, science, math, and the development of both creative and critical analysis skills. The focus in Math is on learning numbers, computation skills, early algebra and geometry. Students maintain writing journals and portfolios in the elementary school grades. Students also study Art, Computer Skills, Music, and Library Skills. Middle school students delve deeper into their studies in all subject areas so to gain a necessary depth of knowledge before high school.
Students can also begin the study of a foreign language such as Spanish, Latin, French or Mandarin Chinese. In high school, students take coursework in preparation for High School Regents exams in English, Global History, U.S. History, Science and Math. The high school also offers coursework in foreign languages, performing arts, music, career education, computers, television, business and video journalism. All students are also required to participate in community service.

Keeping Informed: Recent Rye Educational News
- Recognition of Excellence - Seventeen students at Rye High School were recently presented with Recognition of Excellence Awards. The awards are part of a new recognition program introduced by the Rye City School District to acknowledge students who reach certain levels of academic achievement. The awards will be given out on a monthly basis. The awards included semifinalists and commended students from the National Merit Scholarship Program, commended students from the National Merit Scholarship, and scholars from the National Hispanic Recognition program.
- Walk to School - Students from both Midland Elementary School and Osborn Elementary School recently participated in the International Walk/Bike Ride to School Week which was coordinated by the Rye YMCA and the Rye Safe Routes to School Committee. The weeklong event included students and parents forming walking school bus groups to walk or ride to schools.
- Classroom Library - Students in Mrs. Rowe’s third grade class at Midland Elementary School created their own in class library at the school for student use. The students, who had been studying how to use a library including how they are organized, and the resources chosen, decided to create a small library for the classroom. The School Librarian, and Principal and other school staff were invited for the classroom library grand opening.

Chalk Talk: Science News for Kids
A publication and website entitled Science News for Kids created by the Society for Science and the Public (SSP) is an informative and interesting website for older children. The site has a variety of current articles with lots of graphics and pictures on topics such as cool jobs in math, the teenage brain and concussions, and the scents of science. From health to technology to archaeology and everything in between, the articles are sure to intrigue and inform.
