Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Goffstown District Curriculum
In the Language Arts curriculum, Goffstown students will learn how to gather and communicate information effectively through reading and writing. They will demonstrate literacy and reading fluency, as well as a thorough understanding of literary works. As they progress through elementary school, students will be expected to identify the various elements of fiction and nonfiction including conflict, character, setting, and resolution. In high school, students should demonstrate effective research techniques.
The Science curriculum encourages science literacy, process skills, and inquiry, leading to a more in-depth understanding of the world. In elementary school, students will explore biological and physical properties and how they directly relate to their experiences. They will be exposed to topics such as magnetism, electricity, biodiversity, and ecology. Keeping Informed: Recent Goffstown Educational News
- Elementary Facilities Renovation - The elementary schools within Goffstown School District are being considered for renovations. These schools, built well over half a century ago, will be updated so that they are prepared to meet the needs of 21st century learners. This includes Smartboard technology, better internet access, and improved classroom size.
- Taste for Chocolate - The Stonebridge Country Club continued an annual tradition of selling chocolate to raise money for book scholarships that will go to Goffstown students. This event, more than two decades old, is an opportunity for the community to come together in support of the students of Goffstown High School. This year, it was a huge success, even with inclement weather.
- Getting Into the Act - While Goffstown High School puts on “The Wizard of Oz,” the entire community is getting involved. The local library has been decorated to coincide with the beloved story, and they are supporting a Story Walk, where those involved can travel down Main Street while reading different parts of Dorothy’s story. Other local businesses have joined in on the fun, providing pit stops for those on the walk.

Chalk Talk: Avoiding Fallacies - False Authority
One fallacy that is frequently invoked is that of false authority. On the surface, adding in an air of authority to a persuasive argument seems like a good idea. However, it is important to do your research. For example, someone making an argument may claim that because their source is a teacher, the information must be correct. This fails to take into consideration, however, what that teacher is an expert in. A math teacher probably does not have the authority to comment or provide information on topics that relate to economics or government, unless they have separate credentials that qualify them. Similarly, an English teacher probably should not be cited in a mathematical argument. When constructing your arguments, be sure that the sources used are the absolute best for the position being crafted.
