Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pearl District Curriculum
Pearl Public Schools place a high value on the Language Arts education a child receives. Due to this children are exposed to this subject beginning in kindergarten. When the children reach the elementary school, they focus on language and grammar rules. They also learn about possessives, verbs and subjects as well as the difference between facts and opinions. Upper elementary proceeds by teaching about the important ideas in a reading as well as its tone.
Students begin their Mathematics experience by mastering operations, including ideas to help them count at home, shapes and patterns. Reading and understanding graphs is another skill learned, as well as fractions, and being able to draw a shape from a description. In the upper grades, students learn how to use multiplication to determine the area of a rectangle and convert measurements to metric. This leads the students to high school where they now have the skills to advance into graphing and solving absolute values.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Homework
At times, parents and children believe that teachers assign homework as a form of busy work. This is not the case. There are several reasons why it is important for a child to have homework. It is an excellent way for students to review subject matter which has been taught at school. In some subject this is very important, such as spelling and mathematics. The more these skills are practiced the more natural they will become. Homework can also be a way to extend what is learned. This is often the case when there is a research report to be done. This type of homework can show the child how far they have come and what they can do with their acquired knowledge. Homework also encourages independence. Some of the work that children do in the class is built around groups or whole class interaction, by assigning homework a student is given a chance to show that they can be successful, on their own, in that subject.
