Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Bradenton District Curriculum

The elementary Math curriculum teaches students addition/subtraction, place value, number sense, measurement, data analysis, geometry, multiplication/division, fractions, decimals, graphs, and algebra. In middle school, students learn to represent unknowns, interpret data, represent numbers, compare quantities, solve problems, use negative numbers, use percents, and solve polynomial equations. High school students advance to algebra, geometry, liberal arts math, algebra with financial applications, and mathematics for college readiness.

In Language Arts, students learn about fiction, nonfiction, story elements, persuasive writing, narrative writing, expository forms, writing short stories, poetry, informational writing, and literary discussion. The city of Bradenton was established in 1842 and become incorporated in 1903. In 1943, the Florida legislature merged the cities of Manatee and Bradentown to form the current Bradenton. Downtown Bradenton is the home of the South Florida Museum, Bishop Planetarium, and Parker Manatee Aquarium. The Parker Manatee aquarium at the South Florida Museum was once the home of Manatee County’s most famous manatee and mascot, Snooty. He was born at the Miami Seaquarium and Tackle Company on July 21,1948. Snooty was the oldest manatee in captivity and likely the oldest manatee in the world until his death in 2017, when he was 69 years old. Bradenton is also the home of the Village of the Arts, a community in the downtown area where residents live and work in their homes that have been converted to studios, galleries, and other small businesses. Many historic properties are also located in the city of Bradenton including Braden Castle Park Historic District and the Old Manatee County Courthouse.

In 2016, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated Bradenton had a population of 54 437. The population of the city is well spread out with 21.2% of the population being under the age of 18, 20.% being between 18-34, 34.2% being between 35-64, and 23.9% being 65 and older.

South Florida Museum and Bishop Planetarium

South Florida Museum and Bishop Planetarium is the largest natural and cultural history museum on the Gulf Coast of Florida. The Bishop Planetarium is based around educating the public on astronomy and is equipped with a state of the art projection system. The Parker Manatee Aquarium at the South Florida Museum is a Manatee Rehabilitation facility where manatees that are injured or orphaned are rehabilitated and returned to the wild. Since 1988, the museum has housed 36 rehabilitating manatees. In addition, the museum features a variety of temporary exhibitions so there is always something different for everyone to enjoy!

Mixon Fruit Farms

The Mixon Fruit farms is a growing place for oranges, one of the most iconic fruits grown in Florida. Besides oranges, the farm also grows other citrus fruits such as grapefruits and lemons. The farm offers a tropical garden, butterfly garden, and tours of a citrus fruit packinghouse. The space is also available for outdoor events and the Mixon Fruit Farms are also the home of the Orange Blossom and Harvest Festivals. The Orange Blossom Express Tram allows visitors to take a ride through the orange grove to learn about growing citrus. On the way, the tram also makes a stop at the Wildlife Refuge so visitors can see rescued birds, animals, and reptiles that will be rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Once you’re done, visitors also get to stop by the farms large gift shop where they can purchase unique Florida gifts and souvenirs made with citrus fruits. Visitors who tour the citrus fruit packinghouse also are treated to a free cup of freshly squeezed orange juice, grapefruit juice, or lemonade.

Robinson Nature Preserve

The 682 acre Robinson Nature Preserve was once a disturbed farmland but has since been transformed back into coastal and wetland habitats. The Preserve was recently expanded to current size, adding more coastal wetlands and other habitats including mangroves, and tidal marshes. In addition, A 2.5 km long pedestrian only trail, more kayak launches and trails, restrooms and picnic areas were also added. The Robinson Nature Preserve is a popular destination for hikers as there is a wide variety of nature to see. Included on the preserve is also The Mosaic Center for Nature, Exploration, Science and Technology, also shortened to NEST. The NEST multipurpose space is the home of a variety of hands-on interpretive programming designed for all ages, recreation programs such as yoga, and also private rentals.
