Chalk Talk: How to Choose a Tutor

Tutors can help your child achieve academic success, and good tutors produce better outcomes. But how do you find a good tutor? Check with the child’s teachers to get recommendations or conduct an Internet search for tutors in your area. Once you have a tutor’s contact information, ask about training, experience, and possible references. Then ask the tutor what kind of plan he or she would suggest. Ask the child how he or she feels about the tutor. As the tutor is working with the child quietly observe from time to time. This will give assurance that your child is making progress and give you some fresh ideas to help your student yourself. Tutors should be personable, competent, and able to communicate on your child’s level. Think of a tutor as an investment in your child’s academic success.
