Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Shepherdsville District Curriculum
Shepherdsville students study English and Language Arts throughout the grades. They learn about reading, writing, speaking and listening along with the skills of inquiring and observing. There is a core set of standards called the Common Core State Standards for English/Language Arts and children are assessed regularly to ensure that they are meeting them. For instance in writing it is emphasized that the ability to write well is a standard requirement in all careers and professions.
In Practical Living and Career Studies students become aware that their physical health and well being cannot be sacrificed for academics. The curriculum in these areas is designed to address the growing concern about children’s health. Minimum requirements are set out and your child’s school ensures that they are met by covering all standards and assessing students in a variety of formal and informal manners.

Chalk Talk: It’s Never Too Early to Read
Some recommendations exist that say that reading to your child before birth is useful. There is no way to prove that but certainly reading from the earliest ages is helpful. Start by reading a bedtime story to your child every night even when he/she is a baby. Later your child can start to read to you. Successful students even read to their parents and their parents read to them through high school. Reading using whatever method you wish is your child’s window to the world and the earlier you encourage it the better. When buying gifts for your child always include a book. You never know where it will take you. It's never too early to read for learning and for fun!
