Lehi District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The curriculum in the Alpine School District is based on the nationwide Common Core State Standards, which has been localized as the Utah Core Standards. It includes concrete goals in Math and English Language Arts, designed to make students capable of answering challenging questions, solving problems, and applying Math and English skills to other important areas of their lives.
We currently cover the following Lehi-area school district: Alpine School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Lehi District Curriculum
In order to meet the goals of the Utah Core Standards, key skills in Language Arts and Mathematics are taught in an integrated way throughout the curriculum. Students are taught mathematics using a wide variety of resources, such as the use of pictures and graphics to help them understand basic concepts and using manipulatives and other physical tools to help them sort out how to solve a given problem. The goal is to have students understand concretely what a given operation means, and how to apply it to a problem.
In Language Arts, reading is also taught through trying to understand texts directly, with increasing complexity over time. Teachers give only a minimum amount of scaffolding before reading, and students are encouraged to investigate and ask questions of the text, and to reread it, in order to understand it better. The emphasis is on understanding texts, being able to extract meaning from them, and making arguments, evaluations, and interpretations about them.

Chalk Talk: Why Take Advanced Math?
Many students grumble about having to take advanced mathematics courses. Of course, taking higher math is important if you want to end up in a career that uses math, like medicine, engineering, or any scientific or technical field. However, math matters for other students, too—and not just to help you get a good score on the SAT! Math helps teach problem solving and critical thinking skills, which matter in all fields of study. It also helps you practice logic and orderly thought, which are highly important in word-based fields where your writing has to be clear and well-argued. Finally, math has plenty of practical applications in daily life, from cooking to balancing your budget to understanding science and statistical reporting in the news. Not everyone has to love math, but it’s necessary to master basic mathematical skills; tutoring can help if you’re struggling in math at any level.
