Watervliet District and Curriculum

The mission of the Watervliet City School District is to inspire their students and provide an academically challenging educational experience. The district has put the Common Core Curriculum in place so that students and parents have clear expectations for what they will be learning. The curriculum for the district includes basic and advanced skills in academic subjects, the development of problem solving, and critical analysis skills, and the development of an interest in lifelong learning.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Watervliet District Curriculum

In Mathematics, students study a discrete number of topics including basic operational and computational skills, fractions, whole numbers, algebra, geometry and measurement, probability and statistics. They are taught how to use mathematic models and to communicate their understanding in math terms. Students learn math on a progressive path with the material becoming more complex at each grade level.

In English and Language Arts, students focus on learning to read, write, listen and speak using the English language fluently. Specific skills in ELA include learning critical analysis of the reading material including both literature and informational text, and the development of excellent research skills including how to find and evaluate research materials. The use of formal English and reading comprehension skills are part of every academic class students attend so to encourage literacy.

Keeping Informed: Recent Watervliet Educational News

  • Learning About the Democratic Process - Thirty students from Watervliet High School went on a field trip to the New York State Capital in Albany, New York to meet with legislators from the State of New York. The students had a chance to meet and share their views with State Senator Neil Breslin, Assemblyman John McDonald, Assemblyman Phil Steck, State Senator John Flanagan and Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan. The students voiced their opinions on education, college credit courses, and extra-curricular activities.
  • Gap Elimination Adjustment - Regional public forums have recently been held on the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) and how it affects public schools. The GEA is one of the more challenging issues facing public schools as it could result in lost aid and revenue to the schools. The Capital Region BOCES created a video to explain the issues and make them more understandable to the public.
  • Basketball State Final News - The Cannoneers from the Watervliet High School recently took on the Ogdensburg Free Academy in Class B Basketball boy’s regional final which was held at SUNY Potsdam. The team now advances to the state finals which will be held in Glens Falls, New York. This is the second year in a row the team has won the regional final.

Now with webcams from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game kids can watch wild animals and aquatic creatures such as bears, sea lions, salmon, beavers, and bald eagles as they live their lives in the wilds of Alaska. These webcams allow children to see animals and fish up close and personal without having to leave the safety of their home. Check out brown bears at Brooks Falls, sea lions near Seward, and a beaver lodge near the Mendenhall Glacier!
