Syracuse District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Davis School District uses the Davis Essential Skills and Knowledge (DESK) Program to establish standards for students to meet in all grades. DESK is a plan for implementing the Utah Core Standards, which are the statewide implementation of the Common Core State Standards, a nationwide set of educational standards based on the best educational research and designed to make students career and college ready. Davis School District also has a Teaching American History grant to support teachers in offering the best education possible in history and social studies.

We currently cover the following Syracuse-area school district: Davis School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Syracuse District Curriculum

The elementary school curriculum has clear standards in each grade. For instance, in Mathematics, each year has four critical areas of focus, which draw from algebraic, geometric, and statistical concepts appropriate to the age of the students. In first grade, students focus on understanding addition, subtraction, place value, linear measurement, and the properties of geometric shapes; by fifth grade, they have moved on to being able to do arithmetic with fractions, and measuring the volume of objects.

Criteria like this are in place throughout the curriculum, and teachers are instructed in their use and given support and resources to ensure that their students are able to achieve these goals. Syracuse High School uses a “small learning communities” (SLC) model, where students take courses with other students who have similar career interests. This allows students to find peer relationships more easily and to focus their education and personal goals.

Keeping Informed: Recent Syracuse Educational News

  • New Science Equipment - Biology and chemistry classrooms at Syracuse High were the beneficiaries of a donation from a Utah scientific supply company. The $5000 in equipment will allow students to do more hands-on labs, rather than paper labs, and to do them more quickly. Students are excited about the prospects of more fun with experiments in the classroom.
  • Students Learn About Archery - Students at Buffalo Point Elementary got to learn about archery in their gym classes. The archery lessons, with compound bows, were funded by a grant from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Students learned the history of archery, the physical skills necessary to shoot a compound bow, and about targeting, stance, and other necessary elements of good archery practice.
  • New Library Features - Syracuse High’s library system debuted a program to give students “a blind date” with a randomly chosen book, to see if they’d hit it off. The Valentines-themed event was great fun for students, who got to encounter new genres and authors. Students rate the books when they return them, which has led to their peers checking out the ones that got great recommendations.

Chalk Talk: Reading For Reading’s Sake

Students have a lot of assigned reading to do for school. However, it’s really important to ensure that your child has time to read outside of their assigned work. Reading fluently and well is a necessary life skill, and if the only texts your child ever spends time with are those assigned by the school, they may never be enthusiastic about it. Reading for pleasure, or for information that is personally interesting, is as important for building skills, and for developing interests that might lead to future paths. Encourage your child to read widely, both in fictional and informational texts, to broaden their experience of the world.
