Hurricane District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
Like all schools in Utah, the Washington County School District is transitioning towards full implementation of the Utah Core Standards. Utah’s Core is based the Common Core State Standards, derived from rigorous educational research and aiming to make students college and career ready, with specific standards in literacy and numeracy that are implemented in all subjects.
We currently cover the following Hurricane-area school district: Washington County School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hurricane District Curriculum
Key to the Core Standards are the integration of key competencies in reading and mathematics into all aspects of the curriculum. Reading and writing are integrated into the study of science, social studies, and other subjects. Students initially learn to read in the early grades, when they focus on building the skills to be able to read a text without extensive scaffolding (or teacher assistance) to understand it. Once they have that basic skill, they apply it when reading literature and informational texts about other subjects.
Similarly, in Mathematics, students are taught the core principles behind algebra, geometry, and statistics beginning in first grade. They are also taught to approach math problems with an emphasis on what they can do with this information, not performing a given set of operations. Word problems, applied mathematics, and visualizing mathematical concepts is central so that when students take advanced mathematics in high school, they are able to understand why and how they are used. view all hurricane tutors

Chalk Talk: When Should You Seek Tutoring?
Choosing to find a tutor for your student is a difficult decision. It is very important to find a tutor for students who are falling behind their peers in the classroom. Particularly if they are having specific trouble in a limited subject or set of subjects, tutoring can be exactly what they need to get them over a block and into a better academic rhythm. At other times, your child might be ‘out of sync’ with their teacher, and need someone with an alternate perspective and style to make sure they master the material. Or your child might be highly advanced, and need someone who can help them grow beyond the rest of the class. If your child, or you, are dissatisfied with their educational experience, now might be the time to seek out professional tutoring.
