Oklahoma City District and Curriculum
Oklahoma City Public Schools is the largest district in Oklahoma with over 43,000 students. The Common Core State Standards are used for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Within the English Language Arts curriculum listening, speaking, and writing are taught concurrently. Math skills focus on topics such as numeracy, geometry and measurement, algebraic relations, and data analysis.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Oklahoma City District Curriculum
In the Oklahoma State Standards of Learning, mathematics skills that are taught include measurement. Measurement skills taught include those of linear measurement, such as measuring with a ruler to the nearest foot, inch, and half-inch. The students must also estimate before they measure to check for understanding of the length system, and to see what makes “sense.” When learning about linear measurement, the students also are to use the correct unit of measurement when solving problems.
In English Language Arts, the students learn, in addition to reading accurately and fluently, the concept of literary elements. The students discover figurative language that the authors use in works of writing, such as similes, metaphors, alliteration, rhyme scheme, and much more. The students will recognize that the authors use these elements in literature to make the writing more enjoyable and descriptive.

Keeping Informed: Recent Oklahoma City Educational News
- Hospitality and Tourism Academy - Star Spencer High School is now a member of the National Academy Foundation. The high school is now a Hospitality and Tourism Academy. An orientation was held for the new freshmen, where they received information, goodie bags give to them by the Board Agency, and had a great time meeting new friends that were entering the program. Those who are interested in a career in hospitality and tourism can contact the high school for more information.
- Oklahoma City Museum of Art - At the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, students had a great time over Spring Break! They painted, made crafts, sculpted with clay, created pictures, films, photorealism, and much more! The students made many works of art that were inspired by the art in the museum gallery. The artwork was put on display for the reception with their families. Art categories include: stop-motion animated art, photorealism, and filmmaking, and classes were offered during the week of Spring Break. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children of the community!
- Guidance Corner - The Guidance Corner of the Oklahoma City Public Schools has a wealth of information available for the students, no matter the grade. There is much information available to the seniors, especially those that are college bound, but academic tips, employment news, peer advice, and much more is available to the students of Oklahoma City. Chalk Talk: Students and Literature
The more students are exposed to literature, and the more they understand the different elements that authors use in their writing, the students can develop an appreciation for literature, such as fiction and poetry. When the students are taught what each element “looks like” such as a simile, metaphor, repetition, and more, they then can recognize each descriptive characteristic of literature as they are reading. By learning these important elements, the students may want to read more for pleasure and relaxation, rather than just because “they have to!”
