Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Elko District Curriculum
Students in Elko elementary schools learn the unifying nature of science across various subject areas, including life science, geology, and Earth/space science. Inside of these topics, students learn the skills that are necessary for scientific achievement: inquiry, observation, and experimentation. The hands-on nature of the curriculum continues in high school where, in addition to the basics like biology, chemistry, and physics, students can study topics such as human physiology, biotechnology and microbiology.
Language Arts topics are designed around preparing students for the applied reading necessary for their future careers and college. This means that, in addition to the basics like grammar, reading, and composition, students learn to understand the purpose of a text. Early readers focus on determining fact from fiction, while high school students move on to compose detailed research papers on real-world topics using credible sources and thorough analysis.

Chalk Talk: iPods – Educational Super Tool or Classroom Distraction?
The opportunities for goofing off on an iPod seem endless. Games, music, chat applications… can this really be a tool for education? The answer is a resounding “yes!” Many innovative companies have begun weaving educational content into entertaining games in a mash up that is quickly becoming known as “infotainment.” Schools that support i-devices carefully curate the applications that are downloaded, and as a parent it may be wise to monitor your child’s home device as well. Early readers will be thrilled at the interactive books that are available, while older students may be able to use their iPod, Pad, or Phone as a database of science fair project ideas, a geographical reference desk, and a jumping-off point for exploring their innate curiosity about the world.
