Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Burlington District Curriculum

The district is committed to designing instruction around the Common Core curriculum, a nationwide effort to create a set of standards for K-12 Math and Language Arts. Each grade level has a set of standards that students should attain by the end of the school year in order to ready them for college. In particular, students of all levels focus on developing reading skills such as connecting how each sentence contributes to the meaning of a text.

The K-5 Math program curriculum uses the innovative Bridges math program that integrates Common Core Standards for Mathematics in a unique way. Students are challenged to develop deep understandings of fundamental mathematics concepts that will be used as a foundation for higher level tasks. The Bridges program uses tangible objects to teach students math concepts such as addition, multiplication, and fractions. This hands-on approach ensures that students can learn and retain more complex and abstract concepts.

Chalk Talk: Why Join The Team?

School activities are a great for both shy and outgoing students. As school activities usually meet on a regular basis, timid students often feel more comfortable expressing themselves. Outgoing students can develop more meaningful friendships when they are able to work with others in small groups on projects and activities. Social groups that do not normally interact can work on common goals together and learn that everyone has more in common than they might have thought. So when the bell rings, think about staying around a little while to participate in all a school district has to offer both during class and after-school.
