Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Colchester District Curriculum
The Colchester School District uses the Common Core State Standards, which is a set of standards designed to allow all schools to adopt the same curricular goals so that all students can have a common set of skills and abilities that will equip them to be successful in a college or work environment. These standards focus mainly on English literacy, Language Arts, and Math. Students are also required to use technology in order to acquire and apply these skills.
Mathematics focuses on true understanding of the key foundational concepts, skill and fluency in performing mathematical operations, and the ability to use mathematical applications to solve real-world problems. A unique feature of this curriculum is that it focuses not only on acquiring skills, but also personality characteristics, like perseverance, that will aid students in avoiding frustration when it comes to studying math concepts and applying them to math problems.

Chalk Talk: Easy Steps to Boost Learning
Many have heard the old adage, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” However, breakfast is often one of the most skipped meals as students rush off to catch the bus or simply prefer to allocate potential eating time to a few more minutes of shut-eye. How can students balance the time that it takes to eat with their other interests and responsibilities? One suggestion is to think of quick, portable meals that can be eaten on-the-go. Bananas, apples, and other fruits and vegetables can be munched on the bus. Granola bars, individually packaged fruit cups, yogurt, or applesauce also provide healthier options that can be tossed in a backpack on the way out of the door.
