Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Rutland District Curriculum
The Rutland Public School district expects academic excellence across all grade levels. A Rutland Public school student is expected to write and speak with efficacy, understand what they read, practice active listening, and develop critical thinking and analytic skills. The students should use their creativity and do research with all the resources available, including computer technology. If students are struggling, the district has an intervention plan to address issues that impact student learning and provide necessary support services.
Students develop and hone reading and writing skills all of their classes, but in particular Language Arts. Speaking, listening, and research are also covered in Social Studies and Civics. Each department has a set of unique goals and learning standards that they communicate to students. Students cycle through their classes in Professional Learning Communities (PLC) in which they collaborate with other students, teachers, parents, and the community towards their goals in teams.

Chalk Talk: Studying with Friends
Ever tried to nail something with a screwdriver or a wrench? Neither of those tools works as well to drive a nail straight as does a hammer. The same is true when deciding which friends to invite over for a study night. Sure, some friends may be great to watch a movie with or toss a Frisbee with in the backyard, but not every friend will help accomplish the goal of acquiring learning material. It is best to choose study partners who are motivated to succeed in school and are serious about spending the time to study. If you do get off track with a little side conversation, limit these interruptions to ten minutes. Remind each other of the purpose of the visit. After successful study sessions have resulted in good test scores, go out to celebrate with all of your friends!
