Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hartford District Curriculum
The State of Vermont Department of Education has frameworks, or standards, meant to assure that all of Vermont’s students receive a quality education that will prepare them for higher education and career goals. Hartford schools are dedicated to fulfilling four goals, termed vital results - communication, civic responsibility, reasoning and problem-solving, and personal development are used in all the subjects covered by district courses.
History and Social Science courses teach students to investigate and evaluate historical events, understand conflicts and how to resolve them, and to appreciate the diversity of the world. In Science, Mathematics, and Technology, standards require questioning current theories, experimenting to test hypotheses, and solving problems in the living world. In Arts, Language, and Literature courses, students are expected to respond to media and literature and use the artistic process to express themselves.

Chalk Talk: Take a Break!
Contrary to popular belief, studying for hours and hours on end is not the best way retain learned material. In order to commit material to memory for the long-term, it is best to break up study sessions into smaller sections. Why? Well, research indicates that we remember best what we learn at the beginning and end of a study section. The items studied during the middle portion of time are the most likely to be forgotten. So by studying for smaller lengths of time, with breaks in between, we artificially create more beginnings and ends… resulting in more material being retained. What can we do during a study break? We can take a short power nap, grab a healthy snack, or take a walk. All of these activity help to refresh our bodies and brains for the next portion of studying. Breaks can be a guilt-free part of the study process if we align our methods of study with scientific evidence!
