Kalamazoo District and Curriculum

The Kalamazoo School District is the largest school district in southwest Michigan and leads the region in growth. Constantly innovating, this district has increased the number of AP courses it offers, implemented new curriculum to align with state standards, and constructed the first LEED Gold certified school in Michigan. Teachers and administrators also actively cultivate a ‘college-going culture’ so that all Kalamazoo students are encouraged to fulfill their full potential.

We currently cover the following Kalamazoo-area school district: Kalamazoo School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kalamazoo District Curriculum

The curriculum used by Kalamazoo School District is based on national Common Core standards. English and Language Arts instruction begins with foundational concepts such as phonics and spelling. As students grow, they are taught reading comprehension skills that allow them to unlock the meaning in both fiction and nonfiction text. Students are also exposed to rich vocabulary and daily writing experiences for varied purposes like letter writing, or crafting a thesis statement.

The Mathematics curriculum focuses on hands-on learning as students explore different ways numbers are used in our world. Beginning in Kindergarten, the Standards present students with different themes, such as Number Sense or Measurement and Data, which are revisited each academic year. In high school, this district partners with the Kalamazoo Area Mathematics and Science Center to give students additional opportunities to integrate learning in both subjects.

Chalk Talk: What Is an Advanced Placement Course?

Advanced Placement (AP) courses are designed by a group called the College Board to present high school students with college level work. The coursework is rigorous and designed to prepare students for college-level learning. At the end of each course, students can also choose to take an AP test and if they score at a designated level, colleges often grant credit in that subject area. Each AP curriculum is designed by experts and college-level professors.
