Chalk Talk: Planetariums

Planetariums are a great educational resource for learning about science and astronomy outside of school. Traditional technology makes use of a ‘star ball’, a globe lit from the inside and pricked with holes, to project images of stars onto the planetarium’s dome. Each hole is precisely positioned to accurately represent the night sky. However, planetariums are increasingly switching to digital technology which allows greater flexibility when designing programs. Many communities operate planetariums and often they are associated with a city museum.
