Jacksonville District and Curriculum
The Onslow County educational plan uses both the new Common Core Standards and the North Carolina Essential standards. Both set of standards are taught and assessed concurrently. The goal is to prepare students to progress in school while providing clearer and more rigorous, consistent goals in order to be well-prepared for college, a career and life.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jacksonville District Curriculum
The standards for Mathematics in grades K-5 primary focus is arithmetic. Because arithmetic accentuates how the number system works, arithmetic is a base-line for students to organically move into algebra by the time they reach middle school. A student’s comprehension of algebra, to include the importance of building number theories and the study of proportional reasoning, is prepared by the time they reach high school. In high school, the emphasis is on algebra, numbers, geometry, probability and statistics.
The standards for English Language Arts illustrate a consolidation of literacy. The communication skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening and language are sewn-into the standards using both informational and literary text. Other essential parts of these standards include student’s ability to read a range of increasingly complex texts through their school years. These texts include informational, argumentative and narrative writing so students learn to use evidence found from texts to support their interpretations.

Chalk Talk: Once in a Blue Moon
A blue moon is really just another name for a full moon. But unlike other once per calendar month full moons, a blue moon happens when there’s a second full moon in a single calendar month. This only happens every two to three years; making a blue moon rare. Because a blue moon is so rare, the term blue moon doesn’t literally mean the moon is the color blue, but it’s termed to mean a rare event. The next time someone mentions, “once in a blue moon,” you might want to show off your knowledge and respond, “oh, so you mean every two to three years’?”
