The Hopewell City Schools prepare students for the world of the future by integrating technology, media and the Virginia Standards of Learning to create a curriculum that is beneficial for each child. The standards establish a path of learning within each subject by focusing on distinct learning strands and developing students depth of knowledge within the major topics of the subject. Students are also expected to participate in community-based learning through awareness campaigns, outreach and other connections with the community.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hopewell District Curriculum
The schools use various technologies to assist students to become successful readers. In the elementary grades they use Reading Recovery as in intervention to assist students with reading. The Daily 5 is also used in the classroom so that children learn to become independent readers by reading to themselves, working on writing, reading to someone, word work and listen to reading. They use these reading skills as they progress to middle school, where they are introduced to a variety of genre and literary devices.
Mathematics at Hopewell City School begins with students working at Math Work Stations. These are areas of the classroom that allow mathematic ideas to be reinforced or to help them understand new concepts. Through these groups an educator can monitor the children to see if an idea needs to be re-taught. All the skills that they learn from elementary through middle school are continually built upon so they are prepared for different types of math.

Keeping Informed: Recent Hopewell Educational News
- FBLA and FCCLA Fundraiser - The Future Business Leaders of America and the Family Career and Community Leaders of America made a donation to the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation and The James House. These two groups held well-planned and prepared fundraisers to raise the money.
- Art Class Donation - Students from Hopewell’s Art Classes created coloring pages that will be used to help fifth grade students review historical information. The classes work with The Historic Hopewell Foundation to put this book together. The fifth grade students will color in the book after the take their tests on the Standards of Learning.
- Teacher of the Year - A special education teacher has been chosen as Hopewell School’s Teacher of the Year. She was chosen for her dedication, positive attitude and her love of her specialization in education.

At one time, most schools only offered students the basic science classes that they would need to advance into college. Now this is very different. Schools offer Honors classes and Advanced Placement classes as well as regular science classes. It makes it difficult to choose what to take. Admission offices generally measure a student by their transcript placed against what the high school offers. Most often students are advised to take three years of a science class with a laboratory section, but to be placed at the top of the curve, a student should try to take the highest level of science offered at a school. This is only if the student believes that they can do well in those classes. Talk to advisors and science teachers to have a better idea of what they think can be achieved, then do the best work possible in those areas.
