Pearl City District and Curriculum
Schools in Hawaii are run by the Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE), and Pearl City schools are no exception. The standards upheld by the DOE are designed to not only create successful students, but also to impact the whole of Hawaii — as students succeed in the workforce, they can help with the expansion of Hawaii’s economy. To this end, the DOE is implementing a shift to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), with implementation to be complete by the 2013-2014 school year.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Pearl City District Curriculum
Students at Pearl City schools will benefit from the Common Core Standards implementation in a variety of ways, especially in the areas of Mathematics and Language Arts, a key focus of the CCSS. High school students, through earning Algebra and Geometry credits, will learn the logic of math. They will also receive instruction in writing in multiple formats and reading critically through English Language Arts and Expository Writing classes.
In addition to preparing students in traditional subjects, Pearl City High School also upholds six General Learner Outcomes (GLOs). With a focus on areas including technology, communication, and production, these GLOs are intended to prepare the Pearl City High School graduate for life as a contributing part of society. Additionally, the development of critical thinking strategies and the ability to conduct independent work are end-goals for student learning.

Keeping Informed: Recent Pearl City Educational News
- Increased College Readiness - Public high school graduates in 2012 have shown their readiness for success by enrolling in college at a higher rate than previous years. Kapaa, Farrington, Pahoa, and Baldwin High Schools were among those that made a notable upward shift in the number of students entering college within a two-year span.
- Educator Effectiveness System - A new contract for teachers, the Educator Effectiveness System, is set to take effect by the 2013-2014 school year. The contracts focuses on linking teacher pay increases to professional development and evaluations.i
- Going Green - To reduce the amount of advertising leaflets and related material making its way onto campuses, the Hawaii State Department of Education has created new rules for promotional material distribution. The guidelines restrict the amount of marketing allowed on campuses while recognizing students’ and parents’ rights to receive this material.
