Kahului District and Curriculum
Kahului-area schools, in partnership with the Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE), are committed to producing well-rounded students through upholding six General Learner Outcomes (GLOs); these cover technology use, analytical thinking, successful communication, community contribution, superior production, and self-directed learning. With attention to these GLOs, Kahului-area schools hope to prepare students for success in college, entry-level jobs, and beyond.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kahului District Curriculum
In an extra effort to prepare students for the challenges they’ll face when entering post-secondary schooling, the DOE and Kahului-area schools are implementing a switch to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), expected to be complete by the 2013-2014 school year. The biggest changes to the curriculum will take place in mathematics and English Language Arts, both of which will receive extra focus on complex and analytical thinking.
Maui High School, which serves Kahului-area students, outlines additional school-wide goals. High school students can expect to see these changes in their required graduation courses, which, by 2016, will include Algebra, Geometry, English Language Arts, and Expository Writing. These are designed to help educators better serve students by providing common standards for faculty to uphold. Goals include providing support services for students, encouraging parental involvement, and maintaining a rigorous curriculum.

Keeping Informed: Recent Kahului Educational News
- Summer Food Service Program - The Hawaii State Department of Education is a 2013 participant in the Summer Food Service Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The program aims to make certain that children from low-income families receive adequate nutritious food while school is out for the summer and is a great volunteer opportunity within the community.
- Increased AP Courseloads - Across the area schools, more and more students are participating in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. These courses offer students the chance to take college level courses which may also earn them credit in college upon successful passage of an end of year AP Exam.
- SAT Exam Participants Rises - The number of Hawaii public school students in the Class of 2012 who sat the SAT exam was 5,841, a 2 percent increase from 2011. Class of 2012 national and Hawaii State scores remained relatively close to scores from 2011.

Chalk Talk: How to Build Vocabulary
A large vocabulary is important for students as they enter post-secondary education; not only do college entrance exams test this area, but coursework is more easily understood by students who know the words found in texts and lectures. Students can build vocabulary with a few simple steps. First, whenever students encounter unfamiliar words, they should write down the words and seek out the definitions. Next, students can use flashcards to memorize new words. This activity is great for filling otherwise idle time, such as riding the bus. Last, students can learn common word roots. Because many English words come from Latin or Greek roots, memorizing these will make guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words easier. With a little work, students can expect to improve their vocabularies by a handful of words each week.
