Welland District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs
The District School Board of Niagara and Niagara Catholic District School Board both follow the Ontario Curriculum to ensure all students receive a high quality learning experience. The Ontario Curriculum is divided by elementary and secondary guidelines, but the elementary curriculum is designed to develop the skills necessary to achieve the goals of the secondary curriculum. In addition to core academics, the districts also have a number of specialized programs that connect students with international learning opportunities, college-level academics, cooperative education opportunities, and many other options.
We currently cover the following Welland-area school districts: District School Board of Niagara and Niagara Catholic District School Board.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Welland District Curriculum
Teaching and learning in Welland follows the organization of the academic subjects as laid out in the Ontario Curriculum. The curriculum provides an overview of each subject in terms of describing the skills and knowledge required to become proficient in the subject. The curriculum also describes the conceptual knowledge and thinking skills that students gain through the content of the courses.
For example, in math students need to understand major topics like algebra or geometry and will also gain in thinking skills like problem-solving and spatial thinking. The curriculum does not describe how these topics should be taught or what material a teacher should use, rather it provides standards that all teachers in the province should include in their instruction so that all students meet the standards.

Chalk Talk: Building Organization Skills
Starting in fifth grade, the student’s workload will be such that they need to begin to build organizational skills. Each student from this year on, should have a planner to keep track of assignments and when they are due. They can even ask a friend if they can check each other’s’ planners to make sure they have the assignments written down. Parents can also develop a reward system when the child completes an assignment or fills in their planner. Finally when there is a long-term assignment, use a calendar to help them plot out mini-steps toward their goal.
