Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Middlebury District Curriculum
The Mary Hogan School builds a strong foundation with its curriculum that focuses on the history and geography of the United States as well as flora and fauna native to the United States. The Middlebury Union Middle School uses this foundation to teach students to be informed citizens who understand the interdependence of politics and society. They also learn how individuals and groups can use governmental resources and their own voice to protect the environment which they learned about in elementary school.
At a high school level, the curriculum is based on the 21st Century Learning Expectations developed by the Vermont State Board of Education. These standards are designed to ensure that students are prepared to enter a college or career setting with the skills necessary for success. In all classes regardless of subject matter, students are taught to think critically and collaborate to find solutions to problems and about what they are reading and writing.

Keeping Informed: Recent Middlebury Educational News
- More than Soup - A couple of nationwide companies are helping local schools to raise funds for awesome tools for the classrooms of Middlebury! Last year, the art program use raised funds to purchase a kiln, a type of oven used to dry and set pottery. In total, over $3000 was raised. How exciting that so much good can be accomplished simply by saving a few labels from box tops and soup cans and bringing them into a local school!
- Latin Film Festival - Isley Library recently hosted the very first Latin Film Festival which featured film projects developed by students in Latin classes at MUHS. The projects ranged from dramatizations of textbook passages to reinvented episodes of Scooby Doo. Awards in twenty-three categories were awarded by an “Academy,” including some unique ones, like “Best Accent” which acknowledged good pronunciation of Latin phrases.
- Arts in Middlebury - To show its appreciation for the arts, the Addison Central Supervisory Union is hosting an arts festival. This year, the theme will be “Art in Motion.” This theme will highlight both artwork and performances that feature physical movement, but also emphasize emotional movement as people react to the emotional content of the pieces. The location of the event will be the Mahaney Center for the Arts at Middlebury College.

Teachers want to help, but they cannot help if they are not aware that an issue exists. Perhaps you know what help you need, or your teacher can help you to identify and address the root cause of your difficulty. They can make suggestions to help you improve. Your parents can also be an advocate, especially if you are young or shy. Parents can communicate with teacher and administration in your behalf, or arrange for outside tutoring services. Remember that your success is important to many people, but you may have to speak up to let people know what you need. Your voice can be a powerful instrument in your continued success in academia.
